Get the Lead Out of School Drinking Water Act Notification

In 2022, the Missouri legislature passed the Get the Lead Out of School Drinking Water Act (RsMo 160.077). State statute 160.077 sets standards for lead concentrations in school drinking water. The law requires districts to conduct inventory, sampling, remediation, and monitoring at all potable drinking water outlets used or potentially being used, food preparation, as well as cooking and cleaning utensils.

The deadline for testing under the new law is August 2024. Webb City School District has been actively working with Environmental Works out of Springfield, Missouri to comply with all testing requirements. The district completed an inventory and testing of all water sources during the spring of 2024, but out of an abundance of caution, the district chose to perform additional tests of classroom and restroom sinks, not intended for drinking purposes. Lead testing results are required to be communicated with Webb City School District families, posted on the district website, and reported to the Department of Health and Senior Services (DHSS).

Missouri law requires a limit of 5 micrograms per liter of lead in water for all Missouri schools. This threshold is well below the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA’s) recommended action level of 15 micrograms per liter.

After receiving lab results, the district has taken the following steps in the remediation efforts:

♦ Eliminate access to water sources testing over the threshold

♦ Replace exceedance faucets and water fountains

♦ Display appropriate signage on non-drinking outlets

♦ Removing the water source if needed
