Successful Substitute Teaching

When You Arrive

* Dress appropriately * Wear your badge at all times * Arrive early at your building * Know for whom you are subbing * Check in at the main office to get your room information

Start the Day

* Review plans * Review teacher notes about specialized student needs * Find out about extra duties * Be familiar with the classroom and safety protocols (crisis plans available in each classroom) * Introduce yourself to neighboring teachers

Managing the Day with Students

* Be in class when students enter * Introduce yourself to the students * Share the plan for the day with students * Tell students you are in communication with their regular teacher * Follow the lesson plans and expectations as closely as possible

Finishing the Day

* Leave a note for the teacher about how the day went (reference the lesson and behavior) * Leave the classroom neat * Please let the office know before you leave the building

Substitute Expectations

Substitute teachers are a vital part of the success of our schools. We appreciate your efforts in supporting our staff members and students. Please do not hesitate to ask other people in the building, the secretaries, or the building administration about things of which you are unsure. We want this to be a great experience for you and our students. Thank you again for joining our team. 

Dress Code

* Neat, clean, and appropriate clothing (business casual) * Jeans should only be worn on Fridays with no holes * Leggings only under dresses or skirts * No shorts or hats * Dresses or skirts should be knee-length or longer

Behavior

* Please refrain from: embarrassing, harassing, or discriminating against students * Please use appropriate language * Please refrain from physical contact with students * Best practice is not to be alone with students * Please refrain from giving medications or food to students

Substitute Teacher Job Description

Reports To & Evaluated By:   Building Principal

Summary:   Performs a teacher’s classroom instruction and duties while the teacher is absent.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:   Other duties may be assigned. Assumes the responsibilities for instruction of classes when a teacher is absent. Assumes all other responsibilities for that teacher when the teacher is absent. Follows lesson plans to the best of your ability. When lesson plans aren’t available, you can get help from the administrator. Maintains appropriate records, including checking test papers, recording grades, student assignments for homework, projects, and the necessary clerical work required to maintain student records for an absent teacher. Assists students who need special instruction/accommodations. Provides individualized and small group assistance for students as indicated by lesson plans. Leaves communications for the teacher. 

Supervisory Responsibilities:   Supervises students and assists paraprofessionals for instructional purposes.

Qualification Requirements:   To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements below represent knowledge, skill, and/or ability. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions. 

Education and/or Experience:   Must have 36 general college credit hours from an accredited college or university, or the 20-hour Frontline training. 

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:   Valid substitute teaching certificate

Language Skills:   Ability to communicate in English and understand basic writing and grammatical rules. 

Mathematical Skills:   Ability to perform fundamental math skills.

Reasoning Ability:   Ability to solve practical problems and deal with various instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. 

Other Skills and Abilities:   Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory in a specific field. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, and the community. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both in oral and written form. Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies. 

Physical Demands:   The physical demands described here must be met by an employee to perform the essential functions of this job successfully. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, talk, or hear. The employee will occasionally sit, walk, and reach with hands and arms.

The employee must occasionally push and/or move up to 50 pounds, such as a piece of equipment. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus. The employee continuously interacts with the public and other staff and occasionally meets multiple demands. 

Work Environment:   The work environment characteristics described here represent those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Work is performed indoors.

    • Calls in the morning are always for that day
    • If you miss a call from Frontline Education, please call back. The job may still be available.
    • If you are called for a job and the start time has passed, the job is still available. You can still accept the job through Frontline Education.
    • After doing so, please call the school or the substitute coordinator and let them know when you can be there, and they will cover you until you arrive. 
    • You may log in online or call the 800 number 24 hours a day to check for available jobs.
    • Your username and password for the 800 number are sent to you in an email.
    • You will also receive an invitation asking you to create a different login for internet access.
    • Most jobs are assigned through the automated system.
    • There are times when the principal or sub-coordinator will call a substitute directly.
    • Fingerprinting cost is $44.00, located at Atlas in Joplin. Our district code for subs is 1057.
    • Arrival at the building should be 10 minutes prior to school starting. Give yourself plenty of time to prepare for the day.
    • The Basic and Advanced Training videos on Frontline should answer most of your questions. 
    • You are welcome to call or email the substitute coordinator anytime. 
    • Substitute Teachers can work a total of 4 days a week in our district.
    • Substitutes may also work for long-term absences.
    • Long-term absences are any absences over two consecutive weeks.
    • If a substitute works in a long-term absence, they are ineligible to work that amount immediately following their long-term sub job.
    • Webb City Schools currently pays $110/day for regular jobs, $120 for long-term jobs.
    • Pay periods end on the last day of each month.
    • Checks are issued on the 10th of each month.
    • All checks will be mailed unless picked up at the Central Office (411 North Madison Street) before 3:30 pm on payday.
    • We do not offer automatic deposits unless you are retired from our school district.
